Peace in the Middle East - A Golden Opportunity

President Obama, There has never been a better time to influence the course of events in the Middle East toward democracy, security, and the prospective of peace. One major, long standing obstacle to peace, and rallying cause for the region is the plight of the Palestinian people. The facts of history will likely convey to many that at minimum the Palestinians got a raw deal out of the creation of Israel, and have a solid case for justice, and a nation. A two state solution is the only sustainable outcome. On necessary ingredient a viable outcome must be a Palestinian state the majority of Palestinians can accept. Perhaps in a way similar to the creation of the Irish republic, a referendum on a theoretical proposition creating such a state. Without mastery of the subject, I do hear from various sources, the 1967 boundaries may suffice in this. Once the Palestinians have, by majority vote, agreed to these boundaries, and the creation of their nation, that majority accepts treaties and cooperation with their neighbor Israel. This will not end the violence, however it will create a Palestine and Israel, that exist through the will of democracy, and can cooperation together, and with the Arab and international community, in working to expand and solidify peace and cooperation. Israel has it 'sparrow hawks,' however a strong incentive is the real prospect of maximum security through cooperation and understanding. The good will of neighbors is far more security than a powerful military and a sea of enemies. The Israelis also greatly benefit from international aid, military aid, and this leverage must be applied strongly in persuading them to compromise for the benefit of all, and to the point they can give what is required as the minimum the Palestinians can actually accept. Regarding Syria, it would be amazing, if a new regional coalition of Arab democracies, such as Egypt, perhaps Tunisia, and certainly Lybia, once settled, can join with international allied powers, and perhaps even in some role, with Israel, in a new regional coalition to assist the Syrian people in toppling a bloody regime, and there too establishing democracy. Helping those in need in their hour of greatest need can go a long way toward undoing past animosity. Israel might consider this. Democracy, and coalition, may later work to assist in the democratic uprising and liberation of other nations in the regions, particularly Iran. America failed the people of Bahrain, allowing the Saudi's to curtail that democratic uprising. I believe this failure was of strategic necessity, and to my knowledge the Monarchies of Bahrain and Saudi are on the somewhat benevolent side, relative to other dictatorships, they are still non democratic and oppressive of popular liberty and political freedom, and America must find a way to influence transition reflective of our democratic values and principles. Promoting humanitarian aid in regions like the Palestinian Territories may be one strong lever in promoting understanding and cooperation. The international NGO aid community working side by side with Palestinians strictly to assist those in need to bridge crisis and become self reliant, is a powerful tool. This is an ideal organization to promote in the Palestinian territories, to support, and spotlight as one amongst a broad international community of NGO aid organizations and people, who are willing and very eager to assist the Palestinians and others in need, and prove by example that understanding and cooperation are the foundation and steps to true peace, security, and prosperity.
