Help for a Single 65 Year Old Female in this Economy

Greetings and Good Will President Obama:

I recently read about the mortgage-relief program initiated for underwater homeowners and believe it will be a great help for those who qualify.  I send kudos to you and those in Washington that made this possible.  Unfortunately I don't think this will help me.

I build my house in 2005 and in 2008, at age 62 I was laid off from my job as a HR Manager after 38 years of service.  In 2008 (at the height of the recession) it was impossible for a 62-year old to find any type of job, and believe me I looked jobs in/and outside of my profession.  After my unsuccessful job searches in 2008 I went back to school and got my Bachelor of Science degree and also took a certification course to obtain my professional certification in human resources---tools that I thought would improve my chances of finding a job.  Unfortunately, it didn't.

In March 2009 I refinanced my mortgage reducing my monthly payments from $2315/month to $1931/month.  At the time I was unaware of the HAMP.  When I did find out about HAMP I was told by my lender the program is only available for homeowners with mortgages originated on or before January 2009, and since I refinanced in March 2009 I was ineligible.  Moreover, I do not qualify for HARP because my current interest rate is less than what is offered by HARP.  Since I was laid off in 2008 I have remained current on my mortgage, using my savings to pay my mortgage and other bills, and at this point I have depleted my savings.

I plan to start drawing my social security benefits this year, but the amount I will receive per month will only cover my mortgage.  I don't have a clue as to how I am going to pay my other bills electric, water, car insurance, etc.)  I don't want to walk away from my house because I've invested too much love and money in it, plus I don't have anyplace else to go.

I am a healthy, energetic person currently working short-term assignments through a temp agency which is blessing if/and when work is available.  I have been on many interviews for a permanent job position, and even though there are laws regarding age discrimination, I am never the one who gets hired.

Mr. President, I have a Freddie Mac backed mortgage and am hoping there is some help for homeowners like me in getting our monthly mortgage amount reduced.  For me personally, finding a job to supplement my social security, or getting a reduction in my mortgage payments will give me the means to keep my mortgage current, pay my other expenses and continue to live in my home and not become homeless.

I know you get thousands upon thousands of letters from people in similar, or worse situations than myself, but I am praying I get a response and that you will take in consideration my dilemma and the dilemma of Americans in similar situations.

Respectfully Submitted,

Shelby
