Dear President Obama,
I would like to know what your position is on ex-felons re-integrating into society? I have a felony background that dates back to 2001. I had a huge drug problem, received help from a wonderful man, by the name of Judge Cruzot, in Dallas, Texas. I have not used or been in any trouble since then, but my past continues to haunt me. I am unable to rent an apartment in a nice area, secure employment that pays a livable wage, and we can just forget about any other benefits! Since 2001, I have struggled with homelessness, joblessness, and lack of education, training and skills. Finally, last year, I was in a position to enroll in college and that has been fantastic! The problem is, that there are still so many roadblocks. I just filed my taxes. I made $5800 last year. But because of the drug convictions 11 years ago, I did not qualify for the American Opportunity Education Credit, which really hurt me on my refund. Although I did quality for the Hope Credit, I could have gotten twice that amount back. I am very dependent on my financial aid to help pay my living expenses until I can get my degree and a stable work history, through the Federal Work Study Program. I also can not qualify for food stamps because of the past drug conviction. It just is not fair, that I should pay for the poor decisions I made for the rest of my life, by being denied the same hand up that others are receiving.
I know it is a house that is controlled by penny-pinching republican's and that ties your hands many times, but I am interested in hearing what you think.
I am going to assume that this letter made it into your 10 letters per day, that you read, and thank you now for taking the time to read it.
Sincerely,
Debbie

So Hard
Hello Debbie, I feel like I am the same situation you're in. I got into some trouble as a teenager (20+ years ago) and today I am almost 40, but still having a hard time with housing and employment! I can't even enjoy going on field trips with my kids because of what happened in my teen years and you're right, its not fair! I have written to my county commissioners and justice of the peace but no one will respond back. Sometimes I feel like there is no need for me on this earth. Life is just so hard.
